Ending Knee Pain: It's Not Just About Your Knees

Ending Knee Pain: It's Not Just About Your Knees

By Michael Sudbury, LMT · 6 min read

You've iced it. You've rested it. You've had it scanned, injected, braced, and possibly scoped. Maybe you've done months of physical rehabilitation targeting the quad, the hamstring, the IT band. And still — the knee hurts.

Here is the most important thing we can tell you: if your knee pain keeps returning despite doing everything right, the knee is not the problem.

    It is the victim.

"I had been told my knee was just worn out. Three months into the Release Works Method and I was hiking again — pain free. Nobody had ever looked at my hips."

    — Release Works Client

Your Knee Is Not the Problem

The knee is one of the most mechanically constrained joints in the body. It is designed to flex and extend — that is essentially it. It has very little capacity for rotation, lateral movement, or compensation. When forces arrive at the knee that it was not designed to handle, it absorbs them anyway. And over time, that absorption becomes pain, inflammation, and breakdown.

The question is: where are those forces coming from?

Almost never from the knee itself. The knee sits between two highly mobile joints — the hip above and the ankle below. When either of those joints loses range of motion, stops rotating correctly, or develops fascial restrictions that limit their natural movement, the knee becomes the hinge that compensates for everything they can no longer do.

Your knee hurts because your hip is stuck. Or your ankle is restricted. Or the fascial chain running from your lower back through your glutes and down the back of your leg has tightened to the point where every step you take loads the knee abnormally.

The knee is sending the signal. The problem is somewhere else entirely.

    What Is Actually Causing It

The fascial system is a continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds and connects every structure in your body — muscles, nerves, bones, organs. It transmits force, maintains posture, and coordinates movement across the entire kinetic chain.

When fascia tightens — from injury, repetitive stress, surgery, or simply years of accumulated physical demand — it creates restrictions. Those restrictions alter how load moves through the body. A tight hip flexor changes pelvic tilt. A restricted iliotibial band changes the tracking of the kneecap. A locked ankle changes how force travels up through every joint above it with every step you take.

None of these restrictions show up on a standard knee MRI. The imaging looks at the knee. It does not look at the system the knee belongs to.

This is why so many men spend years addressing their knee pain with approaches that target the knee directly — and keep ending up back in the same place. The intervention is anatomically correct but systemically incomplete. You are treating the location of the pain, not the origin of it.

"The spot that hurts is never the problem. The fascial system doesn't lie — it always points us back to the real source."

    The Whole-Body Approach

The Release Works Method of Healing™ begins with a postural assessment — a systematic examination of how your entire body is organized, how load is being distributed, and where restrictions in the fascial system are creating the compensations that end up expressing as knee pain.

In most cases, we can identify the actual source within the first session. And more importantly, we can demonstrate measurable change — more range of motion, reduced discomfort, altered movement quality — before you leave.

This is not because we have done something to your knee. It is because we have begun releasing the restrictions upstream that were loading it incorrectly in the first place.

The protocols are progressive and systematic. We are not chasing symptoms. We are working through the fascial system methodically, restoring the mobility and load-distribution capacity of the hips, the pelvis, the lumbar spine, and the lower leg — so that the knee can finally do what it was designed to do, without absorbing forces it was never meant to handle.

If you have been told your knee is simply worn out, or that you need a replacement, or that this is just what getting older feels like — we would ask you to consider one question before accepting that: has anyone ever looked at the system your knee belongs to? Book a free consultation.

    Real Results

The men who come to Release Works with chronic knee pain have almost universally tried the conventional path. Cortisone injections that provided three months of relief and then wore off. Knee braces that redistributed the load without resolving it. Rehabilitation protocols that strengthened the muscles around the knee while the underlying fascial restrictions remained untouched.

What they had not tried was addressing the root cause — the restrictions in the broader fascial system that were making the knee compensate in the first place.

When that work is done correctly and progressively, the results are not temporary. They are structural. The knee is no longer absorbing forces it cannot handle because the hips and pelvis and lower leg are now doing their jobs again. Movement is restored. Pain resolves. And the client leaves not just feeling better — but understanding exactly why they feel better, and how to maintain it.

That self-sufficiency is the goal of every protocol we deliver. We are not building a dependency on us. We are building a practice you own. The Release Works Method.

The knee pain you have been managing does not have to be permanent. It has a cause. The cause can be found. And when it is addressed correctly — with a trademarked, progressive method built specifically for this — the results are inevitable.
